About Virginia Satir and The Satir Growth Model
Dr.
Yung Tsang Sun May, Grace spent ten
years to research on the doctrine of world renowned master, Virginia Satir
(1916-1988), the so called of “mother of family therapy” and pioneer of family
therapy. She published a PhD thesis on study of clinical supervision of Satir.
She found that Virginia Satir spent her lifelong effort to develop and teach
her life philosophy and called it the Growth Model, Seed Model, Human Process
Validation Model and Human Validation Process Model.
Satir emphasized on spiritual nature of man, validate each individual unique
and beautiful life force. She hopes everyone who learnt from her will practice
what has been learnt and empower themselves, shining out each unique light.
Hence, she has not just once mentioned in her interview that she did not want
her students to focus on learning from her, and let the world to have many
little Satir. She did not name her doctrine as Satir Model. But this has been
existed and made well known to people. Dr. Yung
Tsang Sun May, Grace therefore choose to use Satir Growth Model as doctrine of
Satir, hoping that people can understand her main beliefs.
After
spending twenty years of learning, doing thorough research and practicing
fully, Dr. Yung keep deepening her understanding with Satir doctrine. She
finally sorts out one set of Satir Growth Model that preserved Satir’s original
essence and integrated Chinese cultural background. The content of the course
is thorough, with clarity of concept and theory, highly effective in
application of personal growth, professional counseling and clinical
supervision.
Dr. Yung thinks that the Satir Growth Model is hard to understand but
easy to practice. This is because we spent all of our life to deal with people
and matters and become so used to put “make things better” prior to “being a
good person”. We become functional but forgotten or never thought of how to become
a fully person who live an abundance life. By learning Satir Growth Model, it
allows us to go back to our origin, no matter deal with whatever matter, we
will start with how to being a person. The Satir Growth Model invites us to
validate each individual unique life force, validate self and respect
everyone’s value, be responsible to each life, become own life choice maker and
finally own the peace within, peace between and peace among. This process is
not easy and it is difficult to understand. However when we know the essence,
then we can practice it easily and live our life with the Growth Model. We can then
handle matter and people with ease and easily.
Dr. Yung designed the course in such a way that it emphasizes on
different tools and techniques, it even emphasizes that the students can learn
the techniques by appreciating its essence rather than its techniques. The
student can follow his/her own unique character, the circumstances, and combine
with the meaning of different tools and techniques, utilize the tools
appropriately and not just copy how people used it and forget about its core
value.
Satir sees the counselor as a good tool and encourage them to make use of
self in the counseling process. They can explore and grow together with the
clients. Therefore, The Satir Growth Model training will allow the students to
experience the process of “difficult to understanding but easy to practice” and
“appreciate the essence and forget about the techniques”. It focus on
cultivating counsellor’s “self” and “technique”, become congruence, able to
take care of self, take care of clients and the situation, equip with
professional skills and conduct, be humble and confidence in professional
counselling.
Course design
This
certificate course in professional counselling was designed by Dr. Yung Tsang
Sun May, Grace. She has been learning from her experience humbly, making it
better and better. This course will keep its original structure, and enhance
with the part of “making full use of self”, emphasize that the experiencing of
Satir Growth Model starts with the effect of experiencing personal growth. Therefore,
the students must finish The Essential Course of the Satir Growth Model-
Advance Level(Professional Preparation) in order to register for this professional counseling course.
The
latest arrangement of the course has excluded the practicum. The whole course
can be separated into five modules, focusing on “theory and practical in
class”. It includes module one, “making
full use of self” - hoping each and every students can experience their third birth;
module two, “overview of theory” – hoping the students can understand the
essence of the Satir Growth Model and live the spirit of the Satir Growth
Model; module three, “clinical application”- other than the clear explanation
and demonstration in class by Grace, it even emphasized on the exercise led by
the trainer and facilitator; module four, “group practice” – this purposely
arranged 36 hours group practice inserted in between module three and five
allows the students to practice and discuss, strengthen their ability in the
practice of tools and microteaching of the Satir Growth Model; module five,
“deepening study of clinical application” – allows the students to practice the
“mantra” and “practice”. Other than the group practice, the rest of four
modules comprises of 125 hours are led by Grace in person. Students who
completed the course will be awarded with Certificate of Professional Counselling
Course Using The Satir Growth Model (Theory and Practical in Class).
Those
who are interested to join the clinical practice must complete the course of
“theory and practical in class” and recommended by Dr. Grace Yung, then he/she
will be able to join the Certificate of Professional Counselling Course Using
The Satir Growth Model (Clinical Practice).Kindly pay attention to the notice
of Satir Association in the future.

Course in Professional Counselling Using The Satir Growth Model is promoting
the third birth in man and designed to cultivate professional counsellor that
equipped with skills. We believe that the students are able and willing to make
appropriate and responsible choices towards their continuing growth, making
effort to have “peace within, peace between, and peace among”; willing to make
full use of “self” and “technique” in professional counselling so that the
client can live more happily and at ease.
² Dr.
Grace Yung will lead all the workshops in the course. So the students will get
many chances to learn from her directly, share her personal cultivation and her
excellent experience in applying the Satir Growth Model with clients that are
from different cultural backgrounds. The students will have chance to observe
Dr. Grace Yung’s demonstration and through peer group learning, they are able
to apply what has been learnt.
Course Objectives
The students
who completed the “theory and practical in class” are able to:
1)
Understand and master the application of the
Satir Growth Model in counselling – fundamental beliefs, fundamental theory,
different tools and techniques and the concept behind.
2)
Understand the attitude and conduct of the
professional counseling using the Satir Growth Model.
3)
Apply the systemic theory of Satir Growth
Model, especially to understand the effects of family origin towards
individual, and further enhance the understanding of self and interpersonal
relationship.
4)
Experience the process of “difficult to
understand but easy to practice”, back to the origin, no matter dealing with
whatever matter, shall start from how to be a person

Emphasize on each unique and beautiful life force,
validate self and respect others’ value, be responsible to own life, becoming
own life choice maker, care for personal and professional needs all the time,
using the Satir Growth Model to enhance personal growth and make full use of
self in practicing counselling.

In the demonstration and group practice,
students can experience the real application of beliefs and tools of the Satir
Growth Model in professional counselling.

Dr.
Grace Yung has worked in the educational front for more than 40 years as a
teacher in schools and psychological unit, a lecturer and a school principal. She
has been awarded with Hong Kong Outstanding Educators Award in 1992. She
started her work in counselling in year 1983 and become a counsellor in
secondary school, psychological unit in hospital and private sector. She
started her work in clinical supervision in year 1997.
In
year 2002, she founded Green Pasture Whole Person Development Centre with the
support from partners. She has been putting efforts in teaching, counselling,
supervising and publishing service. She is promoting peace within each
individual, peace between interaction of people, and peace among in all
situations, she believe that everyone can find the spiritual green pastures
within their heart.
Being
a very experienced counsellor and family therapist, course trainer and planner,
Dr. Grace Yung involved in promoting individual congruence, harmonious
relationship within family and interpersonal. She provides training course and
professional service to professionals and lay people in Hong Kong, China and
overseas and highly appraised by people.
Dr.
Grace Yung’s counselling approach is based on the Satir Growth Model. She
focused on enhancing the clients and students to make full use of self-healing
energy, be responsible and becoming own choice maker happily. She obtained good
results in her teaching, counselling, family therapy and clinical supervision.
Her spirit of learning tirelessly makes her to excel in her professional. Her
PhD research allows her to deepen and fine-tune her understanding towards the
Satir Growth Model and so making her the first scholar who research on Satir
clinical supervision. Her research won the praise of panel as the most
attractive and enjoyable thesis in his academic life.
Dr.
Grace Yung has been involved in promoting the learning of the Satir Growth
Model in Hong Kong and in the world for the past thirty years. She has been appointed
as the president of Hong Kong Satir Center for human development and also the
first Asian who elected as the board member of Virginia Satir Global Network.
She is the first Asian who won The Living Treasure from Satir Global Network in
2009. She will keep promoting and develop the counseling and supervision belief
that focus on growth and suits Chinese community.

Outline
Module 1: The Satir Growth Model of “Using of Self”
To further
understand the principles of the Satir Growth Model, experience the process of
“difficult to understand but easy to practice”, back to the essence, no matter
whatever “things” we “do”, we have to start from “being a person”. Explore
deeply into family of origin and effects of personal experience towards the
growing process. Explore the make full use of personal inner resources.
Experience the family reconstruction which combines different tools of Satir
Growth Model, turning the obstacle into booster, allowing self to experience
third birth, becoming someone who can be responsible to our life and become our
life choice maker, can make use of our self as a good “tool” in the process of
counseling.
Content:
- Using the different tools of The Satir
Growth Model to understand self better.
- Clarify the current needs at the moment
for growing purpose, preparative needs and/or therapy needs.
- Deepen the use of The Satir Growth Model’s
beliefs and tools, trigger the self-healing power, enhance growth and/or
heal the trauma, to become a “healed” healer.
- Learn and master the mantra of “Use of Self”,
to use the “Use of Self” in counseling effectively.
- Form learning and supportive group with course
mates.
Module 2 : The Satir Growth Model of Theory Overview
Based on the
Virginia Satir’s belief, “Each Person is a Miracle”, it can help the counselors
to understand the beliefs and essence of the Satir Growth Model, master its
philosophy, concept and theory background, and set a direction for their
professional development. They can grow to become the Satir Growth Model
counselor with own unique personal style.
Content:
1. To
have a better understanding of Virginia Satir’s bibliography and world view and
her unique perception & insight of interpersonal interaction & process
of change, and her “success, failure, gain and loss”.
2. To understand the direction & essence of
the Satir Growth Model psychological counseling.
- To understand the goals & process of
the Satir Growth Model psychological counseling, and its “heart teaching”
and “techniques”.
- The principles of using the Satir Growth Model
in the process of counseling.
Module 3: The Satir Growth Model of Clinical Application
The main
micro-skills of the Satir Growth Model will be explained in details and be
applied. Through massive demonstrations, practical exercise and discussions,
the students can better use and master the Satir Growth Model.
Content:
- Assess and evaluate the clients from the
developmental and growth point of view, sort out the client’s development
needs, preparative needs, and therapy needs.
- The basic skills required by counsellor in
each counselling stages
- Construct overall counselling treatment
plan.
- The Satir Growth Model main tools and
micro-skills are applied in:
a)
Counselor is ‘fully present’ before and during interviews,
b)
Connect with client’s life force.
c)
Conduct a comprehensive assessment-fully understands the client.
d)
Set goals – explore together with clients about their problems and transform them
into positive directional goals.
e)
Assess potential intervention points.
f) Use the tools & skills of the Satir Growth
Model to facilitate change and deepen the change.
Module 4: Small Peer Group Practice
Students
formed small peers group. According to assignment given by the trainer, they
practice the roles of client, counselor and peer supervisor, take turn &
exchange of roles. Under the guidance from the small group facilitator, the
peer group will research, discuss & share their learning experience to
deepen the learning in class. They learn how to use the Satir Growth Model’s
tools & theory deeply, and to facilitate personal & professional
growth.

lead the small group practice in module four; assisting in deepening the
learning of students in using the Satir Growth Model beliefs and therapy tools.
Module 5: Clinical application and Deepening
Workshop (inclusive of face to face counseling work)
Further use
and integrate the Satir Growth Model’s beliefs and therapy tools, practice the
counsellors’ “self” and “technique”. Through the practice, the students can
master the real implementation of “heart teaching” and “techniques” in
individual, relationship and family counselling.
Content and
goal:
- Understand & master the elements of effective psychological counseling.
- Through simple assessment of every session, review and enhance the effectiveness of counseling or therapy.
- In depth analysis of client’s case, enhance the capabilities of conceptualize of the client’s case.
- Grasp the whole procedure of face to face counselling and carry out highly effective psychological counselling.
Further use
and integrate the Satir Growth Model’s belief and therapy tools. Through the
practice, the students can master the real implementation of “mantra” and
“practice” in individual, relationship and family counselling.

OR the Essential Course of the Satir
Growth Model for Personal Growth-Advance level(Professional Preparation)
organized by our association and led by Dr. Grace Yung OR attended other
“Professional certificate course in using Satir Model” led by other trainer.
Graduation Requirements
Students
must complete five modules, their attendance shall meet the target (attend at
least 80% of the intensive workshops and small group learning). They must submit
their homework, actively involved in practice in class and small peer group.
They will be awarded with certificate of “Professional
Counselling Course Using The Satir Growth Model (Theory and Practical in Class)”
